Scorton Cycling
History
North Yorkshire Cycling Village

A couple who cycle regularly noticed an increase in the number people cycling within Scorton village, decided to set up monthly rides.  The hope was to encourage people to cycle more; to enjoy local routes and allow an opportunity for them to mix with other people from the community.  Inspiration was taken from groups such as the Harrogate based “Wheel Easy”, who has had success promoting cycling.
After struggling to find a name to promote the rides, John and Fiona Yorke came up with; Scorton Area Bicycling Leisure Excursions, SABLE rides (a Sable you will be aware, in real life is a stoat like animal and also a type of antelope).
The rides started in April 2009 and despite the weather not always been kind, have been well attended. On one occasion fourteen participants enjoyed the ride and we have had through 2009 over twenty individuals join in. The youngest rider so far has been two years of age and our oldest is only 75, so older people as well as families are always welcome. Participants have been quick to pick up the tradition of having tea and cake mid cycle ride and this has become part of each outing, when we visit local refreshment stops
Links have been made with the Cycling for Health course organised by Hambleton DC, which has helped people carry on cycling after completing the course, one rider said “I treated myself to a Brompton folding bike and looked for a cycling group in my area (Askrigg).  A leaflet from SABLE attracted me to join one of their Sunday morning rides to Kirkby Fleetham.  What a caring, welcoming group of cyclists!  It is absolutely true that nobody gets left behind.  I look forward to more fun on the rides and coming home with a great sense of achievement”.
