GET ON YOUR BIKE IN SCORTON

Scorton villagers are in the driving seat when it comes to cycling.

For the village has its own bike group – set up by keen cyclists John and Fiona Yorke.

SABLE – Scorton Area Bicycling Leisure Excursions – looks to encourage people to cycle more, enjoy local routes and mix with other people from their community.

“We noticed there were more people from the village taking up cycling but not together,” said John.
“And we knew of groups like the Harrogate based “Wheel Easy” which has had great success promoting cycling.  So we decided to try something similar in Scorton.”

The rides started in April last year and so far over 20 people have signed up – the oldest at 75 and the youngest just two.
Links have also been made with the Cycling for Health schemes organised by Richmondshire and Hambleton District Councils – free 12 week courses which use cycling to boost health.  Once completed people keen to carry on cycling are signposted to groups like SABLE.

One rider commented: “I treated myself to a folding bike and looked for a cycling group in my area - a leaflet from SABLE attracted me to join one of their Sunday morning rides to Kirkby Fleetham.  What a caring and welcoming group of cyclists -   nobody gets left behind.  I look forward to more fun on the rides and coming home with a great sense of achievement.”

For 2010 monthly Saturday and Sunday rides are being organised to enable more people to get involved.   And a website has been launched - www.scortoncycling.co.uk
