Captain Slog – Scorton’s leading adventure cyclist and reporter
Cycle date 4th April
Training has started for SABLE Charity Ride
Captain Slog solo ride 2nd April....29.31miles-----calories burned........bloody millions (which cancels out anything consumed in the hour following ride!!!)!
Start point Depot in Richmond-Gilling- a death defying crossing of the A66 - Forcett - Eppleby - Cliff - Manfield - Cleasby - Croft - Middleton Tyas - Moulton - HOME.
Unfortunately, I didn't have enough fluid with me so by the time I got home I had a stinking headache and the munchies!!! So had 3 coffee's, a gallon of water and there was this Easter egg sat looking at me. Headache continued into Saturday! Lesson learnt....won't do that again! PROMISE!!! Loads of water next time.
On tandem...7th April....7.1miles......calories burned.....enough..... seats adjusted so a bit lower now and stoker is happier, more stable but still not happy for me to wave to everybody!
Start point HOME - Forest - Ellerton - For Latte and scone - HOME.
Plenty of water and stuff on board, we didn't really need it, but I couldn't take the risk.
Stoker confident that he can do this 50 mile grueller.
Cycle date 8th April 2010................7.1 miles......home - Forest - Ellerton - Home
After almost 24 hours of itchy feet we are able to test our newest addition "THE STARSHIP" all shiny and silver with red forks, sleek seats and a dooooooozzie set of handle bars with nifty gear change things. we head out on our usual what we call "the Forest run" Off we go up the road smiley faces... flies sticking to our teeth at a rate of knots! Turn right towards Forest, first stop, aching shoulders and wrists with leaning forward onto the drop handle bars. It's ok no prob I'll get used to this. Off again, dodging those nasty potholes past Forest, remember I said the seat was sleek, there no mention of comfy!!! another momentary stop before Alligator wood. For some reason my right foot is hurting!!!! Onward my trusty steed, up to the top of the bank at Ellerton hill, gear changes not as smooth as I had hoped for with a minor finger stretching incident, and er.....more friction problems. Down to Ellerton right at the cafe a stop near the camp site, most things either throbbing or just general cramp. Grit teeth and home. PHEW. Ah one or two teething problems with Starship and the words.....doooooozzie.....nifty & sleek are long forgotten. But we are not beaten, some adjustment and alterations we can master this shining fiend and make him our own!!!
Cycle date 9th April 2010.............7.5 miles.........home - Forest - Kiplin - Ellerton - home
For today’s challenge we decided to use Tilly due to some......er.....injuries and technical difficulties!!!! With comfy seats we headed East-south-East.....well that way-ish out of the village, towards Forest, away past Alligator wood, it's drying up a bit in there we think, and out onto the main road at Kiplin, along a bit, left past the cafe, back out onto the main road, through Bolton-on-Swale, swish round the garage corner, gracefully corner the green a gentle wave to Mary as we pass and we're home.
Cycle date 10th April 2010..... Captain Slog solo expedition (titter ye not) 27.5 miles calories burned greatly outway chocolate intake-trust me on this one!!! Depot - Gilling - cross A66 - Forcett - Eppleby - Piercebridge - Royal Oak - West Auckland - Toft Hill - Witton-le-Wear - Fir Tree service station - car ride home.
Another ride out on the way home from work set off much the same as last week with the same intentions, get to Piercebridge road and think well Stoker is at his daughter's house at Sunniside why not head that way and get a lift home? EH.... I mean it'll be great...won't it? All going OK. Managed up that damn steep hill just before Royal Oak, with only 2 stops, I didn't walk just stopped re-inflated lungs and set off again with a focus on that down hill to West Auckland - it's a wonder you didn't hear me going down that hill it was full on. "YEEEEEHAAAAAAA" all the way to the bottom!! For future reference it's all up hill from West Auckland to Toft hill I thinks it's about 20,000 feet above sea level!!!!! 2 stops on that hill. From Toft hill YEEEEHAAAA down then puff pant wobble I think I can, I know I can..... I was like Thomas the Tank Engine. Sounded like him as well, but I got all the way up, up, up to Fir Tree without stopping. Then Base Camp phoned to ask how I was doing and I casually said "great yeah, er you can collect me now if you want on your way home!" So I sat a relaxed with my Boost bar, my packet of Starbursts and my bottle of Lucozade until he got to me. Thought at the time-----"What the hell was I thinking of" Thought after wards "WOW what an achievement I never thought in a million years I would make it up those hills" Possibly the hardest 27.5 miles I may ever do! Bring it on!!
